What is compostable, and why?

Plastic pollution is a significant threat to our environment and has become an issue of global concern. Traditional plastic bags are a major contributor to this problem, with millions of bags ending up in landfills and oceans every year. In recent years, compostable and biodegradable plastic bags have emerged as a potential solution to this issue.

Compostable plastic bags are made from plant-based materials, such as cornstarch, and are designed to break down quickly and safely in composting systems. Biodegradable plastic bags, on the other hand, are made from materials that can be broken down by microorganisms in the environment, such as vegetable oil and potato starch. Both types of bags offer a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional plastic bags.

Recent news reports have highlighted the growing problem of plastic pollution and the urgent need for more sustainable solutions. In a study published in the journal Science, researchers estimated that there are now over 5 trillion pieces of plastic in the world’s oceans, with an estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic entering the ocean every year.

To combat this issue, many countries have begun to implement bans or taxes on traditional plastic bags. In 2019, New York became the third US state to ban single-use plastic bags, joining California and Hawaii. Similarly, the European Union has announced plans to ban single-use plastic products, including plastic bags, by 2021.

Compostable and biodegradable plastic bags offer a potential solution to this problem, as they are designed to break down more quickly than traditional plastic bags and are no harm to environment. It also reduces our reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels used to produce traditional plastic bags. Meanwhile, we need to note that these bags still require proper disposal in order to effectively reduce plastic pollution. Simply throwing them in the trash can still contribute to the problem.

In conclusion, compostable and biodegradable plastic bags offer a more sustainable alternative to traditional plastic bags and have the potential to help combat plastic pollution. As we continue to address the issue of plastic pollution, it is crucial that we seek out and embrace more sustainable solutions.
